Founder
Mary Smallegan opened Custom Quilts Unlimited on February 26, 2007.  The store is 1,500 square-feet at the
front of her home.

Mary is a retired production worker from Johnson Controls Inc. Holland, MI.   Mary makes between 40-50 quilts
and quilting projects annually.  She now has about 100 quilts available at her store for sale, ranging from baby
crib quilts  to heirloom reproduction king-sized bed quilts.

"I like doing the heirloom reproduction quilt designs using century-old patterns and reproduction cloth.  The Civil
War Quilts are my favorite," she said.

Quilting is a three-step process:
  • Sewing together the top quilt pieces.
  • Putting in a layer of quilt filler material, usually cotton batting between.
  • Sewing it together with fabric backing.

"The quilting is in the decorative stitching on the top.  It's the glue that holds everything together," says Mary.
The sewing can be done by hand or on a sewing machine.  Each quilt she makes has a custom-made label that
tells the name of the person it was made for, who made it, the date made, and sometimes a personal message
if it is a gift.

Mary's Specialties
Mary follows all the wrinkles in quilting trends, including t-shirt quilts, memory quilts, and graduation quilts along
with the traditional handmade patchwork quilts. You can also bring in or mail a quilt top and Mary will finish it for
you.  Call or email for further details and price estimates.

Mary  offers a one-on-one machine quilting class on your machine.  You will learn tension, feet, and thread.
Fee $25.00 per  hour. Please call, stop by, or email and she will be happy to schedule you.
